Engraved plate from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). The engraving shows the view from Coquille Harbour, with a European ship, and indigenous people on the coral atoll. In the distance is the island of Oualan (or Ualan). The Caroline Islands are now part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
