Description

Engraved plate 41 from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). Above is an illustration and plan of a 'native house', with a funerary monument and two carved idols (bottom). Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
