Engraving by Ambroise Tardieu after Duperrey, from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). On the left is a 'native house', in the centre a misionaries' house, and on the right a school, with plans of each below. The Society Islands are now part of French Polynesia. Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
