Hand-coloured lithograph depicting J W Hoar's balloon, the 'Queen's Royal aerostat', preparing for an ascent from the pond at Surrey Zoological Gardens in Kennington, South London. Hoar intended to make this ascent on 24 May 1838 in honour of Queen Victoria's (1819-1901) birthday, but the balloon failed to get off the ground and was destroyed by an angry mob. Dimensions: 234mm x 265 mm.
