Lithograph by Garvais for a French poster advertising a scientific conference and balloon ascent on Monday 3 August 1880. The balloon due to ascend is named after the French engineer and physicist, Denis Papin (1647-1712), who was the first person to build an atmospheric piston engine. The ascent will take place at 2 o'clock, following the reading of a poem about the balloon by Mr Coquelin of the Comedie Francaise, and there will be military music and a fanfare to mark the occasion. Other attractions at the event include miniature balloons and a carrier pigeon race. Published by R Marchand.
