Printed woodcut from 'The Illustrated London News', after a daguerrotype by Mayall, showing four men in the car of a balloon waiting to ascend. Scientific ballooning was pioneered in Britain by the meterologist James Glaisher, (1809-1903) who persuaded the British Asociation for the Advancement of Science to sponsor a research programme to explore the Earth's upper atmosphere in 1862.
