Printed woodcut from 'The Illustrated London News' showing the steering apparatus designed by English aeronaut George Graham. Graham and his wife, Margaret, made numerous balloon ascents in Britain between the 1820s and the 1850s. Most of these aerial voyages ended in disaster, and they became more famous for their apparent good fortune in surviving their adventures than for any aeronautical skill.
