Printed woodcut from 'The Illustrated London News' showing Poiteven ascending on horseback from the Champ de Mars in Paris, France on 14 July 1850. The cruel sport of equestrian ascents was started by Testu Brisy in 1798 and quickly taken up by Poitevin and Margat, who welcomed the publicity it gave them. Madame Poitevin was prevented from making a similar ascent on the back of a bull when the couple visited England in 1852.
