Extract from the 'Illustrated London News' with details of Hampton's latest balloon ascent and the construction of his balloon, with particular reference to the new and improved gas valve which he designed. John Hampton (b 1799) worked in the Navy before turning profesional aeronaut and making his first ascent in June 1838. On 8 October that year, he also became the first Englishman to make a succesful parachute jump from Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. He made over a hundred balloon ascents and seven parachute descents, before retiring in 1852.
