Caricature print showing Lunardi being carried through the streets after landing in his balloon near Tottenham Court Road in London. Vincent (or Vincenzo) Lunardi (1759-1806), Italian secretary to the Neapolitan ambasador in London, made the first aerial voyage in a hydrogen balloon in Britain on 15 September 1784. The scene depicted took place on 13 May 1785, when Lunardi made another ascent, this time in a larger, more impresive balloon which he had decorated with a Union Jack as a token of his gratitude to the English for their support. Lunardi set off from the Artillery Grounds at Moorfields but was forced to land in Tottenham Court Road after just 30 minutes when his balloon became defective. Published by R Haraden. Dimensions: 241mm x 292mm.
