Description

Oil portrait by Francois Lepagnez (1828-1870) after an original work by Claude Bonnefond. Jacquard (1752-1834) invented a loom which used a punched card system to weave complicated patterns in textiles. A small model of a loom can be seen to the left of Jacquard in this picture. The punched card system for Babbages's Analytical Engine derived from a loom of this kind.
