Signed oil on canvas portrait by Andrew Morton, showing the Manchester-born inventor and engineer Samuel Clegg (1781-1861). After working as an engineer for Boulton and Watt, Clegg went on to become the asistant of William Murdoch (1754-1839), the pioneer of coal gas lighting. In 1813, Clegg was appointed Chief Engineer of the Chartered Gas Company, for whom he succesfully installed gas lighting in an entire district of London.
