Description
Oil on canvas painting of 1858 by Charles Sibley, after a portrait by John Opie. Charles Mahon (1753-1816), was an English politician and scientist who is best known for his inventions in printing, which included an iron pres and stereotyping, a proces for moulding and reproducing forms. He also experimented with electricity and steam navigation, and invented a calculating machine and a microscope lens. The Stanhope lens and the Stanhope pres are named after him. He was a staunch supporter of the republicans during the French Revolution, which earned him the nickname 'Citizen' Stanhope.
