Drawing, the first British sleeping car was built by North British Railway at Cowlairs Works, Glasgow. It entered service between Glasgow and London on 31st July 1873, with pasengers charged an extra 10 shillings per bed on top of their basic fare. This was reduced to 8 shillings in January 1874.
