Studio portrait photograph by Maull and Polyblank of Rear Admiral George Back (1796-1878). Back fought against the French in the United States of America. In 1818 he accompanied Franklin on an expedition to Spitzbergen in the Arctic Circle, and commanded many other voyages of discovery. Henry Maull and George Henry Polyblank founded their photographic studio in London in 1854, specialising in studio portraits of well-known individuals of the time. Much of their photographic work was used to produce engravings for the then weekly 'Illustrated London News', and forty of their most celebrated portraits were published as 'Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities' (1856-1859). Dimensions: 200mm x 150mm.
