Description

Studio photograph by Maull and Polyblank of Dr Arnott (1788-1874) who was a surgeon with the East India Company and visited China in 1807. Returning to London he lectured on natural science at the Philomathic Institution and was physician to the French and Spanish embasies and physician extraordinary to Queen Victoria. He was also a founder and original member of the university senate of London. The first volume of his succesful book on medicine, 'Physics' was published in 1827. He was a fellow of the Royal Society from 1838 and one of the founder members of the University of London. Amongst his inventions are the water bed (1832) and the smokeles grate. Dimensions: 200mm x 150mm.
