Phillips was Profesor of Geology at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland (1844-53) and President of the Geographical Society (1859, 1860). He is often asociated with his uncle, the geological and civil engineer William Smith (1769-1839), with whom he asisted in creating 21 coloured maps of the geology of the English counties (1819-1824). During his career Phillips wrote over a hundred scientific papers and published several geological works.
