Studio portrait by Maull & Polyblank of Barlow (1809-1885) who was resident engineer of the Midland Railway under William Cubitt. He was responsible for the London and Dover Railway, and also worked on several railways in Ireland. He investigated the construction of wide-span bridges and was engineer on Lambeth Bridge from 1860-1862. Henry Maull and George Henry Polyblank founded the photographic studio Maull & Polyblank in London in 1854, specialising in studio portraits of well-known individuals of the time. Much of their photographic work was used to produce engravings for the then weekly 'Illustrated London News'; forty of their most celebrated portraits were published as 'Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities' (1856-1859).
