Carte de visite photograph by H J Whitlock of Glaisher (1809-1903) who became superintendent of the department of meteorology and magnetism at Greenwich Observatory in 1838. In 1850 he founded the Meteorological Society. He made many balloon ascents between 1862 and 1866; in 1862 he reached a height of more than seven miles alongside Henry T Coxwell, in order to study the higher strata of the atmosphere. He compiled several dew-point tables, and wrote many books and papers, including 'Travels in the Air'.
