Steel engraving after an original by Tisandier. Jeffries (1744-1819) made the first aerial crosing of the English Channel in a hot air balloon with French aeronaut, Francois Blanchard in 1785. Jeffries followed the example of the Montgolfier brothers who piloted the first balloon flight in Annonay, France in 1783. Jeffries is shown in a balloon basket, looking at an aneroid barometer suspended from the basket rim. From a volume of twelve plates in the Penn-Gaskell Collection at the Science Museum, London.
