Mezzotint engraving by Edward Fisher after a painting by Benjamin Wilson. Roger Long (1680-1770) was master of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge from 1733 and twice vice-chancellor of the University (1733,1769). He spent over 20 years writing installments of an important work on astronomy, which was eventually completed by another astronomer, Richard Dunthorne (1711-1775), after his death.
