Chromolithograph by Leslie Ward, better known as Spy (1851-1922), of the Irish mathematician and Astronomer Royal for Ireland, Sir Robert Stawell Ball (1840-1913). Ball was a keen promoter of popular astronomy: his works aimed to make astronomy comprehensible to the non-specialist. This illustration shows Ball standing in front of a giant celestial globe. From the magazine 'Vanity Fair'.
