Engraving by l'Anglois after Potier of Moyse (or Moses) Charas (1619-1698) who was a Parisian apothecary, physician, pharmacologist and chemist. He attributed the characteristic effects of a snakebite to the animal's 'enraged spirits'; a snake can be seen slithering acros a book on his desk. He published his most famous work 'PharmacopEe Royale GalEnique et Chymique' in Paris in 1676.
