Hungarian Theofore von Karman (1881-1963) was a physicist who became head of the aeronautical Institute at the University of Aachen in Germany. After the rise of nazism, Karman and his family fled to the United States and Karman became a US citizen in 1936. He became director of the Guggenheim aeronautics Laboratories, USA, (1930-49), and of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, (1942-45), at the California Institute of Technology.
