Engraving by J A Pierron after Hans Holbein's painting of 1533. Jean de Dinteville (left), French ambasador to England (b 1504), and Georges de Selve, Bishop of Lavaur (b 1508). These young, learned and powerful men are shown with shelves containing a celestial globe, portable sundial, terrestrial globe, lute and flutes, books on arithmetic and hymn books. The distorted skull - a symbol of mortality - in the foreground can, when viewed from the side, be foreshortened to correct the distortion. Published in Paris by Chereau and Joubert.
