Lithograph by Day & Haghe of a drawing by George Perfect Harding. It was Spencer (b 1799) 'Who accompanied Mr Charles Green in that fatal parachute experiment, of Mr Robert Cocking's, July 24th 1837, from Vauxhall Gardens. And has made Twenty seven ascents with Mr Green up to this date, August 24th 1839.' A large crowd had asembled in Vauxhall Gardens in London to see the descent by parachute from a hot air balloon which can be seen in the background. The parachute failed, Green and Spencer survived, but Cocking, aged 61 at the time, was killed.
