Description

'Vue Prise dans les Mines de Wieliczka'. Tinted lithograph by Sabatier, after a drawing by Lauvergne, showing a huge underground cavern in a salt mine complex, with stairwells for tourists. The site is lit overhead by a chandelier. Salt has been mined at Wieliczka from the 13th century. This was an account of a French scientific expedition to Scandinavia led by Gaimard in 'La Recherche' between 1838 and 1840. Printed by Lemercier, Paris, and Ackermann & Co, London.
