Illustration drawn by B Lens and engraved by I Sturt of an early steam pump from 'The Miner's Friend; or, an Engine to Raise Water by Fire' (published London, 1702), by Thomas Savery (1650-1715). Savery was an English inventor and military engineer. In 1698 he patented a steam-driven pump for raising water from mines. A model of the machine was demonstrated to King William III at Hampton Court.
