Engraving taken from the 'Illustrated London News'. This was used as the frontispiece of a 50 page book of specimen tables produced using the difference engine and dedicated to pioneer of computing, Charles Babbage. Father and son George and Edvard Scheutz built a difference engine which was completed in their lifetime; Babbage's had not been. The second of the Scheutz engines was sold to Dudley Observatory in Albany, New York, in the USA, but was hardly used.
