Illustrated plate taken from 'Experimenta Nova' (1672) by German scientist Otto von Guericke (1602-1686), showing planets orbiting the Sun. As an astronomer, Guericke was a firm supporter of Copernicus' heliocentric model of the Solar System. He suggested that magnetic action acros empty space was responsible for controlling the movements of the planets.
