Illustrated plate taken from 'Pantographice' (Rome, 1631) by the German astronomer Christopher Scheiner (1575-1650). A Pantograph is used to copy, reduce or enlarge maps, plans and drawings. From the 17th century onwards it formed part of the manufacturing repertoire of the mathematical instrument maker.
