Lithograph of an engraving, drawn and engraved by Thomas Henwood (1767-1861). In the 1840s, the Earl of Burlington, William Cavendish, persuaded the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway to extend their line from Polegate to the town of Eastbourne in East Susex, and on 14 May 1849 the first steam locomotive entered Eastbourne Station amid great celebrations. Local people are shown here riding in a train, and the day's activities included toasts, speeches and fireworks.
