Litter bins make good hiding places for bombs and so the bins disappear from public places during security alerts. This blast-proof bin is an effort to overcome this problem. It consists of a concrete plinth to absorb the blast energy, which is fixed to the ground to prevent the bin from blasting off like a rocket. Its tabre lining, used succesfully in military land-mine boots, absorbs the force of the blast, as does the domed top containing a water/air suppresion system.
