The plate shows a cartoon bearing the legend '2ZY Manchester calling'. The first radio and television broadcasting stations used call-signs, and many of these identification codes still used today by radio amateurs, ships and aircraft. Most familiar was ZLO for London. As this plate suggests, the public cheerfully accepted this rather official means of identification.
