Description

Plate taken from the Illustrated London News (Vol 56/2, 1856) showing Queen Victoria (1819-1901) about to board the ship at Cowes Harbour. HMS Resolute, a Royal Navy arctic discovery vesel, was sailed back to Portsmouth from the Arctic by the US Navy, under the command of Commander Hartstein, after the ship had been stuck in ice for over a year.
