The first refrigerator manufactured by Frigidaire went on sale in the United States in late 1918, shortly after W C Durant, president of General Motors, had bought the Guardian Refigerator Company and renamed it. The Guardian Refrigerator Company had been established in 1915 by Alfred Mellowes and Reuben Bechtold to manufacture and sell a refrigerator designed by the former, but had failed to produce more than 40 refrigerators in the two years it was trading.
