Illustration from 'The Book of Trains', a children's book about railways, showing postal workers sorting mail on the mail train. The spread of the railway network from the middle of the 19th century substantially reduced delivery times for the mail. The railway continued to be the main means of distributing mail acros the UK, until June 2003 when the Royal Mail announced plans to stop using the railways to transport post.
