Carte de visite by John Mayall of London, showing Queen Victoria's (1819-1901) children, Prince Albert, later Edward VII (1841-1910), and Princes Alice (1843-1878). Edward's scandalous behaviour as Prince of Wales led to the queen excluding him from state affairs. In 1863 he married Alexandra, daughter of Christian IX of Denmark (1818-1906), and reigned as King of the United Kingdom from 1901-1910. Princes Alice married Prince Louis of Hese-Darmstadt, Germany, in 1862. Her youngest daughter, Alexandra, married Nicholas II (1868-1918), the last Czar of Rusia.
