Description

In 1816 the French-born English engineer and inventor Sir Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849) built and patented the first circular knitting machine. Brunel, the father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859), was responsible for several important civil engineering projects, most significantly the Thames Tunnel from Rotherhithe to Wapping in London, for which he used the tunnelling shield that he patented in 1818.
