Model. This model, based on Dorian vase decorations of about 800 BC, represents an early type of Greek warship. These warships seem to have been light vesels with shallow draught. In construction they were simple, the hull being made in one piece in the manner of a large dugout, with the bow shaped to form a sharp ram. Twelve rowers on each side of the vesel pulled oars pivoted on outriggers formed from poles. A small forward deck provided a platform for soldiers.
