Description
A photograph of a man shaking hands with 'The Monster Robot' being exhibited by Mullard at the Radio Exhibition Olympia, taken by George Woodbine for the Daily Herald newspaper on 17 August, 1932. Mullard Ltd were a leading British manufacturer of radios and valves. The term 'robot' comes from the Czech word 'robota', meaning 'compulsory labor. The word was first used in the 1921 play, RUR - Rosum's Universal Robots, by the Czech novelist and playwright Karel Capek (1890-1938). This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
