Engraving showing a man giving a lecture and demonstrating a scientific experiment to a group of wealthy men, one of a series showing the teaching of science to an adult dilettante audience. Education in science was promulgated in newspapers or magazines isued in parts, a publishing practice which continues up to the present day. Illustration published in the 'Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure' in 1748. This magazine, which first appeared a year earlier, was so popular that it ran through 113 volumes and continued in various forms until 1815.
