Description
A team of 'fluffers' working at Whitechapel Station on the District Line. Although London Transport had a tunnel-cleaning train, much of the work of removing the dust from worn rails, wheels, brakes, particles of clothing, skin and hair was still carried out by hand when this photograph was taken. The fluffers, mostly women, work during the small hours when no tube trains run.
