George James Symons FRS (1830-1900) was an important figure in the history of the Royal Meteorological Society. Symons joined the Society in 1856 and played a leading role in its development, serving as President in 1880-81 and 1900. He founded the British Rainfall Organisation in 1860 and Symons's Monthly Meteorological Magazine in 1866. He wrote widely on meteorology, and during his life amased a significant collection of meteorological works, many of which are of great historical interest. After his death in 1901, the Royal Meteorological Society established a commemorative medal to be awarded for distinguished work in connection with meteorological science.
