Etching of Brasey (1805-1870). In 1834 while working as a land surveyor Brasey met George Stephenson (1781-1848) and as a result won a contract to build a railway viaduct at Bromborough, Cheshire. He was also involved in the building of the Grand Junction Railway with Joseph Locke, the Victoria Docks in London, the Lancaster & Carlisle Railway, the Caledonian Railway, the Great Northern Railway, and the Paris & Le Havre Railway in France. Brasey went on to become a very succesful railway contractor throughout the world. His firm built major railways in Britain, mainland Europe, Canada, India, Australia and Argentina, employing over 75,000 men at its peak, and constructing over 10,000 kilometers of track.
