The development of the world's first nuclear-powered ship, the 'Savannah', was the joint responsibility of the Maritime Administration of the US Department of Commerce and the US Atomic Energy Commision. She was built at Camden, New Jersey. Accomodation was provided for 60 pasengers and 9400 tons of cargo. Intended as a demonstration and test ship, she made her maiden voyage in 1962 and crosed the Atlantic in 1964.
