Replica of Stephenson's 'Rocket'. The locomotive represented by this sectioned full-size replica was designed Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) and George Stephenson (1781-1848). It was built to replicate the original as it was originally built and painted in 1829, although this has been superseded by later research. Shown with tender, complete with water barrel, rails, chairs, keys and spikes, the replica was made in 1935 by the engineering firm founded by one of its original designers - Robert Stephenson and Company. It is shown here on display in the former Land Transport Gallery of the Science Museum in London.
