Description
Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote train services to York. The poster shows the 18th century highwayman, Dick Turpin (1705-1739), whose famous ride to York on his horse Black Bes was recounted in Harrison Ainsworth's 'Rookwood' (1824). This image shows Turpin riding at speed through the Yorkshire countryside, with York Minster in the background. Artwork by Doris Zinkeisen (1898-1991) who was born in Scotland and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. She lived in London and worked for the stage, designing sets and costumes.
