The watch was made c 1870 by J Atkins & Son of Coventry for a guard on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. Also shown is the first edition of Bradshaw's Railway Companion of 1840. George Bradshaw (1801-1853) of Manchester was a cartographer by profesion who collated all the available pasenger train information into one handy book. This became an invaluable reference book for railway company staff and pasengers alike and went into many editions.
