image details

Description
Four of the original experimental spinthariscopes made by Sir William Crookes (1832-1919) with the radium supplied to him by Madame Marie Curie. A spinthariscope is a simple instrument that visually shows individual alpha particles by means of the scintillations they produce when hitting a screen of a suitable phosphorescent material.
